What happens when a pandemic influenza virus emerges? If this new virus causes illness in infected people and can spread easily from person to person, an influenza pandemic can occur. For example, an exchange of genes between a human influenza A virus and an avian influenza A virus can create a new influenza A virus with a hemagglutinin protein or both a hemagglutinin protein and a neuraminidase protein from an avian influenza A virus. Antigenic shift also can happen when a non-human influenza A virus (for example an avian influenza virus) exchanges genetic information with other influenza A viruses in a process called genetic reassortment, and the resultant new virus is able to infect people. This can result from direct infection of humans with a non-human influenza A virus, such as a virus circulating among birds or pigs. Antigenic shift represents an abrupt, major change in an influenza A virus. Influenza viruses can change in two different ways, one of which is called “antigenic shift” and can result in the emergence of a new influenza virus. Theoretically, any combination of the 18 hemagglutinins and 11 neuraminidase proteins are possible, but not all have been found in animals and even fewer have been found to infect humans. There are 18 different hemagglutinin subtypes and 11 different neuraminidase subtypes (H1 through H18 and N1 through N11). Influenza A viruses are divided into subtypes based on two proteins on the surface of the virus: the hemagglutinin (H) and the neuraminidase (N). How do influenza A viruses change to cause a pandemic? Influenza A viruses are constantly changing, making it possible on very rare occasions for non-human influenza viruses to change in such a way that they can infect people easily and spread efficiently from person to person. Where do pandemic influenza viruses come from?ĭifferent animals-including birds and pigs-are hosts to influenza A viruses that do not normally infect people. Pandemics happen when new (novel) influenza A viruses emerge which are able to infect people easily and spread from person to person in an efficient and sustained way. Just like the previously available filters, both the tilt and bandpass filters offer the unique continuously adjustable filter slopes in the range 3 to 120 dB per octave. It now offers a total of eight different filter types. The new version of Equalize includes two new filter types – tilt and bandpass. The Mac version is 64 bit and runs natively on both ARM (such as Apple M1) and Intel processors. There are 32 and 64 bit versions for Windows. Choose channel mode for each band independently (mid, side, left, right or full processing)Īcon Digital Equalize 2 is available as VST, VST3 or AAX for both Windows and Mac or as AU plug-ins for Mac.Three different phase modes, including the novel mixed phase mode with adjustable latency.Freely adjustable gain, frequency, bandwidth, resonance and filter slope.Eight different band filter types - low cut, low shelf, peak, tilt, bandpass, notch, high shelf and high cut.You can easily switch between full, mid, side, left or right channel processing for each band and Equalize automatically routes the audio signal internally to ensure the best results and lowest possible latency. A flexible real-time analyzer lets you monitor every aspect of the processing. Band parameters can be adjusted using handles directly in the graphical representation of the frequency response, including bandwidths and filter slopes. Great care has been taken to provide a user interface that is straight forward to use. Latency values below 20 milliseconds ensure that any pre-ringing is masked by the temporal masking of the human hearing while preserving the time-alignment across the audible frequency range. That gives a unique control over potential pre-ringing artifacts which is a common problem with linear phase filtering. Equalize goes one step further, though, and introduces the unique mixed phase mode that allows you to set the latency freely in the range 5 to 120 milliseconds while preserving the phase relationships as far as possible. Needless to say, you can operate Equalize as a zero latency plug-in when using the minimum phase mode or choose to preserve the phase relationships in the linear phase mode. The filter slope can be set anywhere from 3 dB to ultra-sharp 120 dB per octave. Unlike other equalizers, you can freely adjust not only center frequency, gain and bandwidths, but also the filter slope for each band. Acon Digital Equalize is a parametric equalizer plug-in that combines unique features with excellent workflow and an intuitive user interface. © Derek Winnert 2014 Classic Film Review 639Ĭheck out more reviews on derekwinnert. The only one that really works is that “Edge of Midnight” remix with Stevie Nicks, perhaps because Nicks chose to slot herself into Cyrus’ vision rather than the other way around. And the Billy Idol and Joan Jett duets, while sweet tributes to both artists, wear out their welcome pretty quickly. The Dua Lipa feature “Prisoner” would be better suited for the British pop star’s own Future Nostalgia. The one area where the album falters, as records like this tend to do, is in its collaborations - they’re not bad, but they feel more than a little tacked on. Cyrus has long drawn comparisons to her godmother Dolly Parton’s voice - see her instant-classic rendition of “Jolene” - but here, she’s finally achieved the Tennessee queen’s knack for telling a vivid story. folktale imagery in a double ode to Johnny Cash, she ties the very literal fire that burnt her house down in 2018 and forced her to start anew with the creative flame that rages inside her to this day. On “Never Be Me” and “Golden G String,” the two stadium-sized anthems that close out the record, Cyrus meditates on the perils of fame and the hypocrisy of the industry with L.A. “Put you on a pedestal, you’re craving the spotlight/Desperate for attention, nose is bloody, it’s daylight,” she growls on “WTF Do I Know,” one of several not-so-joyous joyrides past parties that go on too late and illicit affairs at the Chateau Marmont. But the Nashville influence is apparent in more substantial ways, particularly in Cyrus’ songwriting on a whirlwind life of fame, drugs, and heartbreak. She wears the desperado hat well on “High,” a lovesick crooner that, much like recent country-pop efforts from Halsey and the Chicks, weaves lap steel among slick guitars and drum machines. This is a post-divorce record, after all, and the only genre that Cyrus arguably does better than New Wave rock is classic country balladry. Unlike her previous album Younger Now, where Cyrus dabbled in a rootsier sound without much substance, she actually has a lot to say on Plastic Hearts. You may call it shameless, but Cyrus knows exactly what kind of leather-jacket-and-combat-boot show she’s putting on here, and her full embrace of rock at its most bombastic, artificial, hair-metal glory is refreshing to say the least. But even she’s not afraid to cop to her influences: The album’s lead single, “ Midnight Sky,” earned so many comparisons to “Edge of Seventeen” that Cyrus decided to double down and release an official mash-up remix, with Stevie Nicks herself in tow. Tying it all together is Cyrus, whose full-throated vocals turn the whole album into an instant karaoke go-to. There’s creeping Nine Inch Nails industrial rock on “Gimme What I Want” and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road -era Elton John on the passionate “Angels Like You.” If you listen closely (or not), the opening on the title track is a dead ringer for those “Sympathy for the Devil” bongo drums. Listening through Plastic Hearts is like bar-hopping along the Sunset Strip - if the Sunset Strip somehow played host to the biggest rock acts of the Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties on a single Friday night, and they were all fronted by Axl Rose. Still, if what you want is an homage, you won’t find a better one than here. (It doesn’t help that the highlights from this album’s rollout haven’t been the album tracks themselves, but rather Cyrus’ live covers of more well-known rock classics like “ Maneater” and “ Heart of Glass.”) Few other celebrities have put their misguided attempts at an image makeover on full display as Cyrus has, and after back-to-back eras as a twerking shock jock and a Flaming Lips psych-pop princess, the sweeping rock homage of Plastic Hearts initially comes across as playing it safe. That Cyrus has come back around to guitars and gravel-voiced hooks is poetic or highly convenient, depending on your view. Security is a key topic as API use develops, and rightly so. We'd like to see industry take a lead in standardizing elements of API technologies around the security and authentication/authorization methods – which is starting to happen with protocols like OAuth 2.0 and the various authorization grant types it supports. 18 Standardizing the plethora of new API offerings which enter the market each year could be more difficult as a result. In contrast to Open Banking, which focuses on opening up access to banking data the API space also has pure technology players creating new concepts and products alongside financial institutions.Look at Open Banking within a year we have already seen several different standards emerge. Looking ahead, we think new API standards could develop quickly. The first thing to note is that there is no universal standard 16 for what merchant payments APIs should look like. 15Īs API technology is evolving all the time, I’m often asked whether there is a need for standardization. 14 Our objective is to allow our merchants instant access to their data. We are also developing APIs around real-time data streaming, 12 that will allow our systems to receive data quickly for reporting and financial needs, 13 resulting in a better merchant experience overall.10 By adapting our legacy infrastructure to integrate APIs, we're making it more straightforward for our clients and for the merchant community to do business with us as a firm. When a client connects one time through our new API layer, they will be able to add a method of payment in one of these local markets that they bill into.7 This is both in terms of how merchants and clients connect into us for payments, 8 but also in the APIs we’re offering through the J.P. 6 Whether it’s integrating konbini convenience-store payments in Japan, enabling WeChat Pay, or allowing a merchant to accept cash payments in Mexican convenience stores, everything is driven by our new API architecture.
